General Camp Information and History

Crystal Springs Camp in the Ochoco Mountains of Central Oregon is a mile high in elevation and lies in beautiful forested country. Large Ponderosa pine timber and open grassland cover the hills. In summertime the wild flowers grow everywhere---the rust-red Indian paint, big white and yellow daisies, the beautiful lavender lupine, orange and red columbine and the Ochoco wild rose. Lynn Hoover

The site of Crystal Springs Camp has a history that goes back to the early 1900's. The Forest Service road passing by the camp was the only road linking eastern Oregon (by way of John day and Mitchell) to towns east (Prineville and Bend). Used by state and county road departments, four of the cabins were housing for the workers and their families.

The camp was organized in 1950 by the Fossil Baptist Church, in Fossil, Oregon, and has been self-sustaining from the beginning. In 1980's the lease was transferred to Missionary Baptist Church in Prineville, Oregon. The camp grew until there were no available rental dates from June thru August.

The camp has been opened to many types of organizations in the last 50+ years and most return from year to year with great anticipation. Most recently, in the last 3 years, the camp has been in dire need of maintenance. Due to this unfortunate situation the camp has not been used or rented for 3 years.

But there's good news on the horizon for Crystal Springs Camp! Beginning in the spring of 2009, the camp committee of Prineville Church began working closely with the Forest Service to define every maintenance need in order to bring the campgrounds to a working and safe environment. We at the Prineville church are excited about this and also have plans to make the camp better than it's ever been. This includes new windows and fresh stain for every cabin, new kitchen flooring, and many more ammenities to make any camper comfortable. New pictures of the camp will be posted in the summer of 2010.

The plan is that the camp will be available for rent by the end of the 2010 summer. Feel free to contact us at the above phone or email address to find out who to talk to about renting this beautiful outdoor facility. We look forward to meeting and serving your organizations desires for a wilderness retreat.
